Where are the Broadway Fact-Checkers?

This past October, composer Lucy Simon passed away at the age of 82. The scope of her career included several solo albums, albums collaborating with her sister, Carly Simon, two Grammy Awards for her work on the In Harmony Sesame Street albums, a Tony Award® nomination for composing the music for the 1991 Broadway musical The Secret Garden, and serving as composer for Doctor Zhivago, the stage adaptation of Boris Pasternak’s novel. Additionally, several of her obituaries offered another accomplishment: they claimed Simon was, in 1991, “only the third woman in history to compose for the Broadway stage” when The Secret Garden took its mainstem bow.

Holding Press Agents to a Higher Standard

Press agents love to tout that their show is the “highest grossing” or had its “best-attended week ever.” This is certainly noble and obviously intended to generate buzz, however it’s less effective when the numbers don’t add up. The statistical errors in press releases are becoming more and more common – yet the numbers are easily accessible to double-check.
